Text Messages Pros And Cons
Text Messages: Pros And Cons
Text messaging is a wonderful tool for people to be able to communicate with each other, especially in situations where a phone call just seems quite impossible or inappropriate. It’s just like mobile email, without the internet connection, and on-the-go.
In today’s busy society, friends can update and keep in touch with one another on events, no matter the time of the day or where they are at, despite their busy schedule. A little short text message (sms) can also brighten up a person’s day. The convenience and availability of text messaging has certainly changed the way people communicate today, more so with the increasingly number of people who are starting to own mobile phones.
Quick, short messages can be typed and sent to inform friends and family of upcoming events or to invite them to functions. It sometimes is easier to text message a person, rather than call, particularly when the other party might be in a meeting or occupied with something at the point of time, thus being unable to answer the phone call.
It is also useful for people who are unable to use a normal phone, such as those with hearing impairment. Text messaging opens up new opportunities in which they relate to and communicate with each other, and with the rest of society.
Of course, even with all the benefits of text messaging, there are disadvantages as well. The convenience of being able to text message from almost anywhere (train, elevator, restroom, classroom etc) is both an advantage, as well as a disadvantage. The disadvantage being poor social etiquette when text messaging during a meeting or a class/lesson.
In order to create that perfect short text message, abbreviated language is used often. This abbreviated language can mess up a person’s grammar and spelling: “I will be late” becomes “I’ll be l8″, “See you later” becomes “c u l8r” etc… Prolonged use of this abbreviated language can have a drastic effect on the way proper English is spoken and written, and is not beneficial for those still in school learning English; even adults are not spared from this syndrome either.
It has become an undeniable fact that abbreviated language in text messaging, has to a certain extent, changed the way the English language is regarded throughout the world. Although you have the choice to ignore reading any text message that has abbreviated language in it, the fact still remains that abbreviated language is increasingly common around the world, and used not only for text messaging on mobile phones, but also for chatting on the internet.
No matter the advantages and disadvantages of text messaging (and abbreviated language), it has certainly changed the way people communicate and relate with one another in this ever changing (evolving) world, and it is up to us to determine how we want to use this technology; for better or for worse.
